Leningrad

I've been to St. Petersburg, Russia twice, once in college and once while in Seminary. In fact the first time I went (1991) it was Leningrad, the second time in 1994, the city had been renamed St. Petersburg. (I've mentioned my trip previously here). One of my most cherished possesions is the passport that I have stamped with the ominous CCCP of the Soviet Union (in red ink of course!).

Leningrad was the site of one of the most monstrous of battles during WWII. Nazi troops laid seige to Leningrad for close to 900 days before the seige was broken. I came across a series of pictures contrasting modern St. Petersburg with WWII Leningrad. Haunting.

Look here for more.

I went to St. Petersburg & Moscow in 1991 with younglife. Just a few weeks before the coup. It was spooky seeing tanks in red square just a few days after I was there. Loved the pictures. Fluidice

Fluidice,

What kind of work were you involved in? We did some construction work on an old Russian Orthodox Church and visited a prison. An amazing time.

It's not 10:44 yet, but I'll post anyway. We essentially put on a YL club/camp for Russians. YL Russia was just getting started at the time. Highlight was the week living in the flat w/ my host family. They honored me with a big bash at the end complete w/ cow tongue, sardines, cabbage, and vodka. I'd love to go back someday.
